Students in our classroom are working in one of three spelling groups, depending on their current skills and needs. At the onset of the year, all students will be in the green group until their skills are assessed.
On Monday students are pre-tested on a new list of words, and on the following Monday they are tested again on the same words in order to assess their progress. I always complete my final assessment after the weekend because it is my intention to assess the students' long-term memory. If I were to assess the students on Friday, I would likely be assessing their short term memory, having just seen the words less than 24 hours prior to the test, and this would not be a valid measure of how many words that they have truly committed to memory.
Following the post-test, the word lists will be added to the website for students to continue to study. Follow-up assessments on words that students did not master will be done at various points in the year.
