Each Friday, your child participates in a Poetry Workshop with the students in Mrs. Gosk’s or Mrs. Clayton's class. As a group, we come together to share the poetry that was written for homework.
The workshop begins with myself and Mrs. Gosk or Mrs. Clayton reading the poems that we wrote (we do the assignment as well), followed by a quick mini-lesson on the craft that we are examining or a conferencing technique.
Students are then divided into groups of 4 or 5, with students from each classroom, and in these groups they share and critique their poetry. The assigned teacher for the group (this position rotates weekly) then chooses the poet that they feel should read to the whole group. The two classes then come together in front of my stage and listen to the students read their poetry and have it critiqued my myself and Mrs. Gosk or Mrs. Clayton.
This is always a lot of fun for the kids, and it’s a great way for my students to get to know some of the other third grade students, and perhaps make some new friends. It also provides our poets with a wider audience and a larger audience with which to share in the end.
